The London Girl Geek Dinners short film directed and produced by Angela Saini of ITN has just been released for an exclusive preview to us. It will soon be hosted on FourDocs (Channel 4 documentary downloads area). Have a look and see what you think! Personally I am really happy with the outcome of the film and I think that it will help to give a real life impression of what us girly geeks are like. I hope you enjoy it!

Speaker: Abigail Sellen
City of Angels movie download
Featuring Abigail Sellen (http://research.microsoft.com/~asellen/) Senior Researcher in Microsoft’s Cambridge Lab in Socio-Digital Systems, a new interdisciplinary group with a focus on the human perspective in computing.
Abigail is interested in simple technologies and learning from everyday life to inform the design of systems that are both useful and compelling. Her talk will cover the topic of research and invention, addressing the relative ease of invention (she has filed around 50 patents) in contrast to the difficulty of making an impact through technology transfer, and the role of research in the process.
Abigail joined Microsoft in June 2004 from Hewlett Packard Labs, Bristol, where she had spent six years researching many different kinds of topics ranging from appliance design to web use to mobile technologies. Prior to HP, Abigail spent seven years at Xerox’s research lab in Cambridge UK (EuroPARC), was cross-appointed to the MRC Applied Psychology Unit, Cambridge, and was a Research Fellow at Darwin College, Cambridge. During these years her research covered many topics including: reading, paper use in offices, videoconferencing design, and computer support for human memory. Much of this work resulted in two books: The Myth of the Paperless Office, and Video-Mediated Communication.

This evening was designed to let women in the technology industry get together and discuss technologies and software that they are working on. Hopefully software problems were solved, advice given and friends made.
