GGD #72 GirlGeekDinners @Graphcore

We are being hosted by what must be Bristols biggest Unicorn this month. They’ve stepped in when our earlier sponsor had to step down due to unforeseen circumstances. Rather than let you down for a second month we did a callout to see if any other comapnies could save the date for us and Voila!! Graphcore stepped in. Think AI, electronics, Robotics and … well anything really!

Graphcore has created a completely new processor, the Intelligence Processing Unit (IPU), specifically designed for machine intelligence. The IPU’s unique architecture means developers can run current machine learning models orders of magnitude faster. More importantly, it lets AI researchers undertake entirely new types of work, not possible using current technologies, to drive the next great breakthroughs in general machine intelligence. We believe our IPU technology will become the worldwide standard for machine intelligence compute. The performance of Graphcore’s IPU is going to be transformative across all industries and sectors, whether you are a medical researcher, roboticist or autonomous car manufacturer.

BGGD Reloaded #3 – AI ethics and challenges (13th November 2018, 6pm)

Our third meetup will be hosted by Seccl Technology in their new office space. So come in and enjoy the start-up environment – some chairs will be provided.

Our speakers for today are:

Kerry the co-founder of tinygiant.io

who will explore both the light and dark side of A.I. Find out how artificial intelligence is shaping the creative industries, uncover the challenges of gender bias in algorithms – and discover why it’s so important for women to participate in the conversation.

Catherine Hodges, a local business owner of two successful hair salons

who is going to talk to us about the challenges of running your own business. Discover if there is such thing as work-life-balance and what Cat has figured out on her journey.

We are looking forward to seeing you there!

BGGD Reloaded #2 – Stronger and better (17th October 2018, 6pm)

Our second meetup will also be hosted by Edit in their lovely Editorium. And here are the exciting topics we will discuss tonight…

1. Introducing: Amy Barrett and I’m a Scientist..

Gallomanor is a very local company here in Bath that provides creative audience-led communication solutions and events. They have a strong, but not exclusive focus on education and reaching school students, particularly in science, engineering, and e-democracy. https://imascientist.org.uk/

2. Featuring: Jane Ginnever on flexible working and addressing conflict situations at work

Jane Ginnever is a Founding Director of SHIFT, a company who helps their clients to clearly define their culture, and create a way of working within their business that is unique to their team and their values and will sustainably deliver the results they’re trying to achieve. She is going to talk to us about flexible working and how these topics as well as other issues can be addressed in any work place situation. She has recently written articles on LinkedIn addressing these challenges:

3 Reasons you should encourage conflict your business and Flexibility is not a female issue

Those are worth a read, not just in preparation for our session on Wednesday 🙂

Edit will kindly provide some snacks and drinks and we will be able to have lively conversations while enjoying the great view from their office. Please arrive around 5.45pm, since a receptionist needs to let you in and we are aiming to start at 6pm.

We are looking forward to seeing you there!

GGD #70 Interested in voice-enabled technology?

Here’s a chance to find out more.

It’s midweek. The weekend feels a long way away. So come and get your geek on with XMOS.

We’ll take you (quickly) through the science of voice and explain how our technology is able to capture voice and strip out background noise – even from across the room and when you’re speaking softly. We’ll also demonstrate our voice-capture development kits and give you a sneak preview into the new areas we’re working on.

We don’t have a talking toaster – but we do have a lamp with attitude, an LED array you won’t forget and a look at what’s possible when you merge voice with radar technology. And if that doesn’t convince you, then we’ve got plenty of anecdotes about questions that are best left unasked of your voice assistant!

The talk will be led by our XMOS girl geeks

Lucia Velasco (Seccl Technology) – Mayden Academy and alternative routes to Tech

Lucia will tell us a bit about her route to Tech and the alternatives that are out there. We will also have a bit of a conversation about how those could be more inclusive and what the challenges are.
