We Have a couple of Great speakers for this month’s Girl Geek Dinner. As it is at Lloyds they have a strict security policy so could you all please ensure that you have a photo ID with you on the night.

Kate and Gudrun will do their talks on “Data Management and Security – a partnership”. 

There will also be a talk from their colleague Emily Turner about her career journey.  Emily works in our Chief Security Office in the “Business and External Engagement” team.

Kate Brooks

I’m Head of Data Management at Lloyds Banking Group; A chief data office role where I have responsibility for Data Quality and Metadata within the group. I have a BSc. in Economics, an ACIB (Chartered Banker) and an APMP (Qualified Project Manager). I have 20 years of experience in data and Analytics covering data quality, metadata, financial analytics, customer modelling and analytics, segmentation and semantic layer development.

When I joined Lloyds Banking Group 27 years ago through a Graduate Programme, I spend the first 6 years in Branch and Commercial Management. In 1999 I wanted to do something more analytical and took a role in data quality management. I fell in love with data from the start, and my background in branch banking meant I knew how to translate data into reality. I’ve always seen data as a way of codifying and understanding customer behaviour.

Twenty years later I am still passionate about data management, and now more people understand how our day to day lives are translated in data – every swipe, every purchase, every check-in. My goal is to organise data better, so we can use it more effectively to provide insightful and relevant service at low cost.

What has fuelled my career is my ability to understand the technicalities of data and bring it to life through stories. My greatest success was developing a data-driven customer profitability model which enabled the Group to sell TSB in 2011.

I mentor many of my colleagues across the gender spectrum, and I am also a mentor for the Prince’s Trust. I always push myself out of my comfort zone, guided by the words of Susan Jeffers ‘Feel the fear and do it anyway’ and my mantra is ‘say ‘yes’ to the universe’. I apply this to any opportunity that comes my way, even if I am terrified. Last year I volunteered at a data conference and the organisers asked me to chair it. I said yes (in spite of my terror) and it was a great experience.

I am a Cyber Security specialist and Senior Manager at Lloyds Banking Group.  My first degree is in History of Art and my career path initially took me into sales, marketing, product management and training.  Experiencing the excitement and frustrations of technology as a user I saw an opportunity to move into creating and shaping solutions for others using my business knowledge.

I initiated my career switch through a conversion Masters at the University of the West of England in Information Technology.  Following progressive roles in programming, systems analysis and IT Disaster Recovery I found a natural home in the field of Cyber Security.  Today I have a wide ranging role focussed on cyber security strategy and consultancy working closely with specialists in Identity Management, Application Development, Digital Transformation and DevOps.  I am a Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP).
