Alexandra Alecu, Software Engineer di Google, racconta sul blog che anche la grande società di cui fa parte è sempre alla ricerca di opportunità di collaborare con organizzazioni che promuovono la diversità e incoraggiano la partecipazione professionale delle donne nella tecnologia.

Come saprete, le Girl Geek Dinners sono un’iniziativa internazionale che fa esattamente questo: ospitare eventi “social” per promuovere il networking tra donne e costruire community con la stessa passione per la tecnologia e altri settori tradizionalmente dominati dagli uomini.

L’interesse da parte di Google si è recentemente manifestato con la sponsorizzazione della Girl Geek Dinner di Amsterdam, dove il relatore principale è stato il famoso matematico (donna) Smeets Ionica.

Google e le GGD condividono o stesso obiettivo: rendere possibile a tutti intraprendere una carriera nel campo della tecnologia, indipendentemente dal sesso. Durante il suo intervento, Alexandra ha delineato le numerose iniziative per promuovere e sostenere la diversità nella tecnologia. Ci sono vari programmi di borse di studio per aiutare gli studenti a perseguire i loro interessi ed incoraggiare più donne ad intraprendere la carriera scientifica, assistendo e partecipando a conferenze di ricerca in tutto il mondo attraverso sovvenzioni per eventi in Europa, Medio Oriente e Africa [info qui].

Essere una geek girl non significa doversi associare a GGD Toscana, anche perchè noi non siamo un’associazione. Sentirsi geek significa vivere un certo modo, o avere simpatia per coloro che usano le tecnologie nella loro vita di tutti i giorni.

Per partecipare al primo evento GGD in Toscana dovrete, quindi, iscrivervi all’evento a numero chiuso che pubblicheremo su Eventbrite, la popolare piattaforma di vendita ticket online.

Riservate un ticket se vi iscrivete da sole, oppure 2 se avete deciso di portare con voi un’amica (o un amico). Non potrete riservare più di 2 ticket e la registrazione all’evento è totalmente gratuita. Qui troverete le domande più frequenti in merito a come iscriversi a una GGD.

Essere fan, aver cliccato su partecipa nell’evento su Facebook, mandare una mail o un tweet dicendo che volete partecipare non vi farà automaticamente iscrivere. Dovrete passare per forza di cose da Eventbrite! E se siete in mobilità… c’è anche l’app per iPhone, cosa volete di più?

This is why on Tuesday the 8th of June, PR’ins and Brussels Girl Geek Dinner organize an heroic ‘battle of the sexes‘ in the heart of Antwerp. 25 Girl Geeks will challenge the attendant men to a gaming tournament, organized by Rock Star Games. They will take a stand against each other playing Red Dead Redemption, the long expected successor of the Grand Theft Auto games.
During the battle, there will be a delicious Western style BBQ at the inner court of the PR’ins showroom.

Red Dead Redemption is a sandbox-style action-adventure western video game with role-playing elements developed by Rockstar and released on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in May 2010.

The game takes place in the year 1911 in the American Old West territory and follows John Marston, a former outlaw, while he tries to save his wife and son, taken by government agents, by capturing and killing his former gang members.

Join us on Tuesday, June 8th, 2010, 6:00 PM at Aqua Books for a bite to eat and a chat at the EAT! Bistro. From there, we will move upstairs to the Live! Lounge for the interactive presentation.

We are now into our fourth month of Winnipeg Girl Geek Dinners, and so far the interest shown has been fantastic! We have had great speakers come out and shared excellent company together.

To continue to grow and cater to our members, this month we are holding a planning meeting on Tuesday, May 11th 6:00 PM at Aqua Books.  We will begin as usual in the EAT! Bistro and move up to the small meeting room shortly after 7:00 PM.  So we know how many people to expect, please RSVP via Eventbrite above or via Facebook.

This event is for everyone; those who are interested in helping out, those who want to share their ideas, and those who want to attend and observe. If you are unable to attend, but want to be involved, please send me an email. We are setting up regular Reading Girl Geek Dinners for this year: we are holding them on the THIRD Thursday of each month after this session. We are always interested in your opinion, what you would like to hear about and, of course, if you wish to sponsor the event.

The next Winnipeg Girl Geek Dinner will be held at EAT! Bistro in Aqua Books on March 9, 2010, starting at 6:00 PM. This month’s event is sponsored by Microsoft. Ruth Morton, an IT Pro Advisor at Microsoft Canada who is presenting for the Align IT series, will be joining us and providing us with some door prizes for this event and future events.

This Month’s Topic: Keys to Success in the Corporate IT World

Valerie will describe her progression from junior software developer to program manager at a major cancer therapy corporation located in the Silicon Valley and discuss some of the tactics she has used along the way that contributed to her success.   One of the key themes of the discussion will be how combining solid technical skills with strong soft skills can provide a significant advantage.

Valerie Romance’s Bio
Valerie Romance is a program manager at Varian Medical Systems which is headquartered in Palo Alto California.  Since 1994, she has also worked for the Manitoba Liquor Control Commission, James Richardson International, Assante Asset Management, and Cengea Solutions (formerly Linnet).  Her jobs have included software developer, systems analyst, project manager, application development manager, and solutions delivery manager. 

In her current role Valerie is responsible for delivering integrated releases of Varian’s suite of cancer therapy products to new and existing customers.  Varian has many locations around the globe including one in Winnipeg which is the office Valerie works from.

Valerie lives near Lorette with her husband Yury and her daughter Natasha.  When not working, Valerie can be found outside gardening in the summer, or cross-country skiing in the winter.  Valerie can be reached at Valerie.romance@varian.com.
