Per chi non ce la facesse a vincere l’omaggio esiste sempre una seconda possibilità (il Pay As You Wish)

A little bit about Ellen
Ellen Grove helps teams make better software through coaching them to create the circumstances in which they can work most productively and effectively. Her Agile coaching practice is founded in over 10 years experience leading software testing, development and implementation teams in global enterprises, a passion for exploratory software testing and user-centered design, and a background in community organization.
She uses team-building and facilitation approaches to support the transition to collaborative Agile work practices at the team, managerial and corporate level, and has conquered the challenges of extending Scrum roll-outs to off-shore development partners and multi-site project teams.
Outside the office, Ellen applies her coaching talents and creativity to keeping her household menagerie of husband, children, dogs, cats, goats, snakes, spiders and birds happy and healthy. Ellen blogs at Mastering the Obvious.

Thank you to those who came along on Thursday, despite the weather and the traffic! It was lovely to see you all at the April Reading Girl Geek Dinner.
Special thanks to our speaker Rachel Cooper and, of course, our sponsors Microsoft UK – without whom this event would not have been possible.
The next event will take place on Thursday 20th May and the registration page will be up very soon.
If you are interested in speaking at any of our upcoming events, or know of someone who is, please let us know. If you wish to support Reading GGD in any other way (including sponsoring one or several dinners), please do get in touch.
Have a lovely Easter!

Our April Girl Geek Dinner in Reading was on Thursday, 23rd April and we had 24 girl and guy geeks at Il Gusto.
The dinner was kindly sponsored by our friends at Symantec who, this time, also gave a lovely prize for a draw: gorgeous champagne that, no doubt, will be enjoyed by the lucky winner Safeena Azar-Burnett.
We enjoyed meeting again with some “regulars” as well as new faces. We hope to see you soon at the next event – we will publish date and venue shortly.
Thanks for coming along and thanks to Symantec for their support.

Why do girl geeks thrive in the Colorado Front Range? Besides being a beautiful place to live, in the high desert at the foot of the Rocky Mountains, it’s a high tech mecca for both large companies (Sun, Quantum, HP, IBM, Level 3…) and startups (see http://boulder.me/). And where can you find us? Well here of course!

Canberra, Australia’s national capital city, has a reputation for being smart, but boring. The inaugural Canberra Girl Geek Dinner is aiming to change that by making it smart and FUN. Lana Brindley got bored of the beer and pizza geek events quite quickly, and decided to inject some excitement into the local scene. Canberra Girl Geek dinners aim to take advantage of the unique Canberra lifestyle, by arranging interesting and innovative events with, for and about some of the nations best and brightest girl geeks.

Charlotte is located in North Carolina and very close to the South Carolina border. It is the nation’s second largest financial center and home to the Carolina Panthers. Charlotte is also close to the Smoky Mountain range and the Atlantic Ocean and now has one more thing that it can offer too!
I am excited to bring Girl Geek Dinners to the Girl Geeks of the Carolinas! Look out for the details of their first event some time in Feb – March!

On a gloomy October day when the world seemed to be falling apart a girl on a small deserted island in the Atlantic ocean stumbled upon a BBC World Service radio program that put a spring in her step. In the program a girl geek was interviewed on a super cool idea called Girl Geek Dinner. There was hope, there was a light, this had to be brought to Iceland.
The girl geek, Kristin, didn’t waste any time. She immediately emailed Sarah Blow (the interviewee) and a few friends and only 3 weeks later the first Arctic Girl Geek dinner was held.
The biggest problem did not prove to be finding girl geeks in Iceland (a Facebook group now includes 170 girl geeks) or a place to meet. The biggest challenge proved to be decided what to call a girl geek in Icelandic. It may be indicative that girl geeks in Iceland have until now not had a proper noun to describe them. A panel of Icelandic scholars was recruited which came up with the word tæknitáta (pronunciation: thai-kn
-tout
). The word literally means technology chick. Needless to say it was an instant success.
Already the second meeting has been called. For anyone in the area interested meeting some technology chicks and learning a bit about IT in search and rescue, please join us at the premises of the search and rescue squad Arsaell, at Grandagardur 1 in Reykjavik on December 11th at 18:00.
With warm regards from Christmasy Iceland,
Magga Dora – tæknitáta

A little while back I got a request about starting a Girl Geek Dinner in Hull, so I sent out the details… a few short weeks later… and they are all set for their first event! Now that’s what I call quick! So without any further delay, if you live or work around Hull and class yourself as a Girl Geek (or a Geek) then do pop over to Facebook and see what their first event is all about.
The first event is sponsored by Hull University. I’m hoping that the local community will get behind them and that some of the local Girl Geeks will also find it interesting too!

This month we’re fortunate to have Susannah Raub speaking at our 2nd Dinner. Google have been kind enough to send her up to Brisbane and has offered to put $20/head towards the dinner.
Susannah Raub joined Google in September 2004 as a software engineer in Mountain View, California. She worked on many features of Google Desktop until February 2006 when she moved to New York and joined the Google Maps – Search Quality team. Overcome by wanderlust, she moved to Sydney in September 2007 and began working on the Google Maps API.
At Google, she has been involved with the global engineering mentoring program, the development of APAC offices, and the AU/NZ Anita Borg Scholarship program. Susannah graduated from Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island with an Sc.B. in Mathematics-Computer Science and a broad base in urban studies, European languages, and economics.

Girl Geek Dinners have been going now for almost three years! (Officially that would be 3 years on the 16th August 2008) So we had a long think about the perfect place for a reasonably large girl geek birthday/ anniversary party and came to the conclusion that Google are great hosts with the perfect space, so we asked them if they would like to join us in our celebration! Lucky for us they said yes!!!
We thought it was a good chance to get together, share some wine, food and conversation!

It should be a fun event and one that I hope you will all enjoy. There is only one release of tickets for this event. After which a reserves list will be created. Tickets will be strictly on a first come first served basis. Sign up early to avoid disappointment. We will also do our best to live stream the event via UStream.tv to here and the girlgeekdinners.com site.
