Hello all! I’m Kate, an Account Managerfrom Zabisco,a User Centred Design Agency in Nottingham. I got in touch with Elsa to see ifthere were any events in the pipleline and to see if I could offer anyassistance. Elsa’s working away from Nottingham these days, and organising theevents singlehandedly was tough – hopefully with my help and her expertise, wecan get the events back up and running so we can get together to learn, networkand socialise!

Our second meeting… yipee!
What: Want to know a bit more about what a Girl Geek Dinner is?

Why: Our speaker for this evening is Kate Bolin who is a Nottingham based web designer, likes web standards and accessibility but is happiest when up to her elbows in CSS. She is also a prolific knitter. You can find out more about Kate on her entertaining blog: http://www.katemonkey.co.uk/.
Every year the website that is a regular stomping groud for all proffesional web designers; A List Apart, runs a web survey to look at the current industry around the globe. Kate will be looking at the results from the most recent A List Apart Web Workers survey, to examine what it tells us about being a woman working in web design. Leave your preconceptions at the door as we have look at the industries and sectors that offer support for women in IT. Then expect a lively conversation afterwards.

I've just returned from Nottingham's Girl Geek Dinners and I am really pleased. Everyone was lovely and a huge thanks to everyone who came out. I've read through the feedback and there is some really useful comments in there and I will do my best to implement as much of it as possible. Some of it is newbie mistakes and easy to fix, so thanks for the feedback. Yet it was all really positive and I am really pleased that my first ever event went so well. Everyone was really supportive, it was a great atmosphere.

Get your tickets here
After a couple of conversations I had with people it strikes me that I should give you a bit of an explanation about why Nottingham's Girl Geek Dinners is a ticket only event and why the ticket sales end 24 hours before the event.
Nottingham Girl Geek Dinners aren't run by a company, we currently aren't being sponsored (this is our first event after all) and we don't get a grant or anything like that. Quite simply there is just me and my enthusiasm, so any costs incurred have to be covered by me personally, that includes food. So if I were to just gather a list of expected attendees and then there were five 'no-shows' that would be £50 out of my pocket. I am not in a situation where I can absorb that cost every month, so I have to ask you to buy a ticket in advance in order to run this event.

My name is Elsa and I'm a geek.
There is definitely a stigma associated with the word geek, especially if you are a woman. Female geeks in the media are often either over sexualised school girls with braids and glasses or sexless braniacs that are social misfits. That or someone is trying to sell you a pink gadget.
When faced with trying to promote an event called "Girl Geek Dinners" it becomes transparent very quickly that there is an understandable resistance to being considered a geek, even among women of a technical persuasion; there remain just too many negative connotations.
I realised many moons ago that I was a geek and learned to love it. I'm a gamer, love sci-fi & comics and can build and mod my PC, to consider myself anything but a geek would only mean fooling myself. But these interests are not to the exclusion of all others and I have interests that are not traditionally geeky but I am just as absorbed by them and I would consider myself a geek in those areas too, purely because I am passionate and knowledgeable about these topics.
I don't suffer from shyness or social awkwardness, quite the opposite, I love meeting new people and making new friends. People fascinate me as much as technology, it is partly why I am so enthusiastic about usability.
So for me being a geek isn't just about writing code, its about being passionate and having an in-depth knowledge about the things that interest you, whether that be World of Warcraft, knitting, mountain climbing or running your own business.
So if you are wondering if you are 'geeky' enough to come to Girl Geek Dinners, the answer is almost certainly yes. The question is what are you 'geeky' for?
