We’re putting together a dinner for the end of March and decided to do a vote for the date of the event.
What suits you best? We’ll be talking about mobile devices of all types and want to get a good discussion going around what your must-have device is, how you use your phone[s], what are the must-have features for portables and much more.
Please use the link below to vote on which day you prefer: March 25th, 29th, or 30th.
Have an idea for a future event? We’ve also had a suggestion for a women in gaming event, and are looking for other suggestions for events in 2010. See you soon!
I thought Girl Geeks might be interested in a post by Harold Jarche that I came across courtesy of @josiefraser on Twitter.
I’d really like it if you could read it and give us some feedback here at Girl Geek Scotland. Perhaps you have some ideas about how we can improve our network? Perhaps you can help us do this too?
Here is a summary of the post:
“All organizational value is created by teams and networks. Furthermore, learning may be generated in teams but even this type of knowledge comes and goes. Learning really spreads through social networks. Social networks are the primary conduit for effective organizational performance. Blocking, or circumventing, social networks slows learning, reduces effectiveness and may in the end kill the organization.”
He outlines Jon Husbands work on “wirearchy” which describes a dynamic two-way flow of power and authority based primarily on trust: “Communications without trust are just noise, not accepted and never internalized to the recipient” Without those trust networks within organisations, implementation of learning into tangible organisational outputs will be blocked.
About 80% of learning in the workplace comes through informal learning, which “happened by accident or the result of observation, coversation and time in the job.”
Implementing Social Learning in the Workplace
For me this section on how to analyse and implement Social Learning is most interesting. This uses Jane Harts five ways of using social media for learning in the organisation:
ASL – Accidental & Serendipitous Learning: from Stocks to Flow
Online communication can be divided into Stocks (information that is archived and organized for reference and retrieval) and Flows (timely and engaging conversations between people, including voice or written communications)
“the Web is an environment more suited to just-in-time learning than the outdated course model.”
PDL – Personal Directed Learning: from Clockwork & Predictable to Complexity & Surprising
Complexity, or maybe our appreciation of it, has rendered the world unpredictable, so the orientation of learning is shifting from past (efficiency, best practice) to future (creative response, innovation).
GDL – Group Directed Learning: from Worker Centric to Team Centric
Bloggers have learned how powerful a learning medium they have only after blogging for an extended period. With the increased use of distributed work groups, it is even more important to foster social learning and web media are the current tools at hand.
IOL – Intra-Organizational Learning: from Subject Matter Experts to Subject Matter Networks
Subject Matter Networks (Mark Oehlert) are a way of finding organisational knowledge. Collaborative groups are better at making decisions and getting things done. The constraints of the group help to achieve defined goals.
FSL – Formal Structured Learning: from Curriculum to Competency
Work competencies will still need to be developed through practice and appropriate feedback (what training does well) but that practice will have to be directly relevant to the individual or group
In Conclusion
We need to share more of our work experiences in order to grow trusted networks. This is social learning and it is critical for networked organizational effectiveness.
Please also leave comments for us here about how social media can should or could be implemented in your workplace. Or if you have any ideas about how Girl Geek Scotland can develop a stronger social learning network please let us know.

On the 18th of February Karin Spaink was our guest. And we were very happy to have her!
By the month our privacy becomes more endangered. So many things are happening right now that constrain or violate our privacy, but the general public and the politicians don’t seem to care much. Karin shed some light on all that is happening right now and gave us all a good fright.
Information is stored digitally more and more. Because it hardly costs anything to store digital information, it’s saved longer. Before, no-one knew what you had seen on TV. When you are watching digital TV, Big Brother is watching right back at you.
Digitilization also makes it easier than ever before to piece together bits of information from different sources.
Karin and others hacked the Electronic Patient Dossier to demonstrate how unsafe it was. If she had wanted to, she could have easily killed people, simply by changing their blood type.
Centralization of data means that data is stored on more levels, every level vulnerable to unauthorized access. It also turns out that the higher up your information is stored, the more lax the security gets.
This development also means that more obsolete data about you is around, because the data always trickles upwards with some delay.
Function creep is the term Karin used for the phenomenon that f.e. laws are implemented with the reason being terrorism, and later used to track down copyright infringements.
Monitoring people is no longer done based on the risk that they are to society, or on the higher chance of success that monitoring will lead to. Monitoring is done simply because it can be done. The general feeling is that society will always be safer with than without monitoring. And not only that, more and more parties are doing it.
Karin showed us a Google Street View picture of a man taking out the garbage, with food wrappers and other telltale signs of his lifestyle on display for the whole world. And, as Karin pointed out, it might not even be his own house, it could also be his mistresses’!
Our rights are decreasing. For example for paper mail there is a post secret; no-one is allowed to open your mail and read it. Since paper mail has as good as dissapeared this right has too. For e-mail we have no such right.
One of the reasons it’s very difficult to do anything about all this is that more and more of our legislation is made on a European level. And some of the rules are not even in legislation but in trade agreements, which is very strange.
Karin told us about the ‘3 strikes and you’re out’-bill, where the mere suspicion of copyright infringement could lead you to loose the right to use the internet.
We don’t seem to mind all this, because we have nothing to hide, don’t we? In fact we are giving away lots of information voluntarily.
But while we are becoming ever more visible to our governements, governments are making themselves less transparent. Karin concludes with the question: If I should have nothing to hide, why does my government?
Come fare?
Ever since the entry-level price of the Apple iPad was unveiled as $499, plenty of doomsayers have been expecting a UK price-tag of £500 and higher. Not so, according to Geeky Gadgets. They have it on good authority that the basic model (WiFI, no 3G) will cost £389.The site has also heard on the techno grapevine that the 32GB WiFi model will cost £439 and the 64GB WiFi model will be available…
