While we’ll have no formal speaker, this will be an Open Mic night–everyone will have the chance to jump up on the mic and engage the crowd with a 30-second pitch. Tell us all about yourself, your business, a cause you believe in, whatever you like really, but you’ve only got 30 seconds to do so.

Quali sono i componenti aggiuntivi per Firefox di cui proprio non potere fare a meno?
Ho voluto raccogliere i miei 10 must-have in vista dell’arrivo del mio prossimo nuovo Computer, perché la prima cosa che farò di certo è installarci Firefox.

Qualcuno sta cercando di tradirlo con il neonato
Chrome. Ma noi geek, sviluppatori web e affini dobbiamo molto al nostro amato browser. Con la sua versatilità ci ha fatto finalmente dimenticare Internet Explorer, roba per dummies.
Sì, ok a volte davvero si impossessa di tutta la RAM possibile e disponibile, ma forse non sarà anche colpa della ventina di estensioni che abbiamo installato e che magari non utilizziamo più?
E’ ora di far pulizia e di sceglierne al massimo una decina.
Ecco quelli che ho scelto io, ma ben vengano i vostri suggerimenti, proponete i vostri must-have nei commenti.
- Better Gmail 2
Non è una gran rivelazione che per noi girl geek Gmail è una delle ossessioni preferite. Better Gmail 2 risponde a molte delle “mancanze” di Gmail. È possibile attivare o disattivare individualmente più di una dozzina di correzioni e miglioramenti, e ogni volta che un nuovo script viene aggiunto in Greasemonkey, potete contare di vederlo aggiunto a Better Gmail dall’autrice
Gina Trapani (il cui ultimo libro fra l’altro era fra i
gadget della GGD Milanese di ottobre).
- Delicious Bookmarks
Delicious Bookmarks è l’ufficiale Add-on di Firefox per
Delicious, il più utilizzato servizio di condivisione di bookmark. Integra i segnalibri e le etichette con Firefox e li mantiene sincronizzati. Salvare un nuovo bookmark o consultare quelli già archiviati è davvero immediato e pratico.
- Dizionario italiano
Dizionario e controllo ortografico insieme, non potrei vivere senza. Noi ragazze dal
typo facile dovremmo avere installato questo componente non solo in italiano, ma anche in inglese, o in tutte le lingue che vogliamo. Basta cambiare lingua con il semplice tasto destro. Per la versione italiana un grazie all’amico
Flod, autore del plugin, e correttore live di molti miei refusi
- Evernote Web Clipper
Questa estensione inserisce un pulsante nella barra degli strumenti e nel menu di scelta rapida e permette di aggiungere facilmente una selezione o una pagina intera a
Evernote. Se Evernote per Mac o Windows è installato – la selezione va direttamente all’applicazione in locale, altrimenti passa alla relativa applicazione Web tramite un pop-up.
- Firebug
Se siete sviluppatori, web designer, o semplici smanettoni htmlisti non potete dimenticare l’estensione di Firebug! Firebug si integra con Firefox e mette a portata di mano un’enorme quantità di strumenti di sviluppo mentre si naviga. È possibile modificare, effettuare il debug, e monitorare i CSS, HTML, JavaScript live in qualsiasi pagina web.
- Google Gear
Cos’è Google Gear? E’ un’estensione per Firefox e Internet Explorer che permette di navigare siti o applicazioni web offline e sincronizzarle quando si ritorna online.
- Google Toolbar for Firefox
Le
funzionalità sono tantissime. Le mie preferite sono sicuramente l’accesso diretto a Gmail, controllo ortografico, indicatore di PageRank, evidenziazione dei termini di ricerca.
- Greasemonkey
Questa estensione ci permette di personalizzare il modo in cui vengono visualizzate le pagine web grazie ad una vasta serie di JavaScript. Centinaia di script, per una grande varietà di siti, sono già disponibili qui
http://userscripts.org.
- Web Developer
Web Developer è un’estensione che aggiunge sia un menu e una toolbar con molti strumenti per i web developer.
- Xmarks Bookmark and Password Sync
Se si utilizza Firefox su più computer potrebbe essere utile Foxmarks. Installare Foxmarks su ogni computer permetterà di mantenere i propri segnalibri e volendo le proprie password sincronizzate automaticamente. È anche possibile accedere al sito web
my.foxmarks.com per gestire i propri segnalibri da qualsiasi computer.
Altre cose da avere o fare assolutamente
- raccogliere i 10 must-have di Lifehacker
- fare un backup di tutte le tue estensioni con FEBE! In questo modo potete tenere sincronizzati i browser dell’ufficio e di casa.

At long last I have some time to write up a few of the recent Montreal Girl Geek Dinner events. I have to say thank you and the participants for their patience in waiting for me to get this together.
Here's the first of three to get us all up to date.
Back in September, we had a great time visiting
The S.W.A.P Team's "Take Off Your Clothes" clothing swap at Piknic Electronik- Parc Jean Drapeau and lending our support for such a super cause.
Rachel Dhawan, of Brazen Design was on hand to give fashion consultations and help folks out in putting together some fab outfits. If you missed out on attending this event, then please don't miss out on next year's. Trust me. There was much swag to be traded and for those of us who made it out, we were blown away with the selection available. All of the remaining 4000 pieces were donated to the Salvation Army and 1945 items were swapped. Wow!
A few weeks after the swap, we hosted our September talk at 'the' local co-working space
Station C. Aleece gave us a recap of the "Take Off Your Clothes" events in Montreal and Toronto and covered how the organization and idea came to be, how the events work, the successes and benefits realized through the creation of this organization and its future plans for growth. With chapters springing up throughout North America and hearing the stories of effective change and connection that is coming from The S.W.A.P Team, we're certain that this is only the beginning for this group.
Rachel Dhawan, bling-mistress and founder of Brazen Design spoke to our group about on "How to Look Good and Buy Local". It was clear to see that this is one of her passions and that she is the human google of the Montreal local fashion set as she fielded some great questions from the crowd on where to find the most sought after and difficult to fit pieces (ie: jeans, boots). Rachel spoke about numerous local fashion designers, what each was known for and gave mention to the local stores that stock their products. I was so pleased to see her encourage our support of these local shops and designers in keeping business local for numerous economic and environmental reasons. Rachel also gave mention to many of the local fairs that happen here in Montreal where these designers are known to sell their wares as well as several online Canadian retailers.
Rachel also be gave us a rundown of her top ten must haves and described the best fit for each and what to pair these items with. It was an information-packed evening but really demonstrated that this girl is geeky about fashion and loves to share this with the local community.

Oramai mancano meno di 20 giorni alla prossima Girl Geek Dinner milanese e ecco che possiamo darvi le prime informazioni:
- iscrizioni: si apriranno mercoledì 2 dicembre alle ore 12 (come al solito pubblicheremo il link da seguire qualche ora prima). Se volete essere sicure di potere partecipare, vi conviene provare ad iscrivervi fin da subito.
- cosa faremo: il tema della serata riguarda connettività e networking. Vogliamo conoscerci meglio e farvi conoscere meglio le prossime iniziative delle GGD di Milano. Voi non dimenticativi i biglietti da visita e la voglia di stare insieme.
