I don’t know about you, but of all the Wii Fit sports I like Yoga best. Of course, that’s not the real thing. Which is why Brussels Girl Geek Dinner is organising a Hatha Yoga session on Saturday 3 October 14:00-16:00 in Brussels.

Hatha Yoga is what most people in the West associate with the word “Yoga” and is practised for mental and physical health throughout the West. Hatha yoga consists of various movements, breath control exercises, and physical postures that can produce a profound state of inner union, vitality, and harmony.
(In case you’re wondering what to wear: just don’t pick anything that could restrict bodily movements. The obvious items including jeans, or shirts. Try loose-fitting, sweat absorbent and comfortable clothes, like yoga shorts, sweat clothes, leotards or yoga pants.)

Girl Geek Dinners – a remarkable movement

I’m getting my notes together for my MC duties for tonight’s Toronto Girl Geek Dinner. We’re expecting 50 or so women (and a few men) from the Toronto technology community to come out to reconnect with friends, meet new people, and be inspired by the ideas and perspective of our featured speaker, Sarah Prevette, founder and CEO of Sprouter.

When Maggie and Jenny started Toronto Girl Geek Dinners in 2007, we were the first location outside of the UK. Now, there are Girl Geek Dinner communities in over 40 places worldwide. That’s pretty phenomenal, don’t you think?

Europe: Italy:E chi se li scorda più tutti quei muffin..

Se c’è una cosa che non scorderemo di questo compleanno sono i “GGD Muffin“. Avevamo già ordinato la torta, il buffet, i drink e anche le M&Ms fucsia e bianche personalizzate da regalare, ma mancava ancora qualcosa, qualcosa fatto con le nostre “sante manine” solo per voi. Ed ecco così l’idea dei mini muffin ggd, 160 per la precisione, tutti preparati il giorno prima in una lunga nottata che difficilmente scorderemo.

Ma le cose da non scordare sono tantissime, a cominciare da tutti quelli che hanno deciso di dedicarci il loro venerdì sera per venire a festeggiare con noi. Tante geek, ma anche tanti maschietti che ci seguono dalla prima GGD Roma, ma anche tanti volti nuovi. Un mega GRAZIE di cuore a tutti!

E poi sicuramente “non s’hanno” da scordare tutti i suggerimenti e commenti che ci avete lasciato compilando ed “imbucando” il nostro questionario. Già, perchè un compleanno, come ogni anniversario, è anche un’ottima occasione per fare un bilancio e per andare avanti avevamo bisogno di sapere cosa ne pensate voi geek delle nostre cene!

E ancora, un grazie va anche agli amici della Blogbeer, che hanno continuato i festeggiamenti fino a notte.

E poi? Poi non finisce qui. Lo staff è già al lavoro per preparare la GGDRoma#3, quindi riguardatevi le foto, seguite il blog e diventate nostri fan su facebook!

Η αγάπη της για τα παιδιά και το ενδιαφέρον της να υποστηρίζει τους γονείς, εκφράζεται με πολύ αγάπη και μεράκι, μέσα από το parents.gr, για το οποίο και θα μας μιλήσει.

18.55-19.15: scrapbooking.gr Η Γιωργία Ανουσάκη, μία γυναίκα που είναι στο Internet από πολύ νωρίς, σκέφτηκε ότι μέσα από αυτό μπορεί να εκφράσει κανείς τις δημιουργικές του ανησυχίες και ταυτόχρονα – σαν μητέρα – να έχει μία πολύ επιτυχημένη επαγγελματική διέξοδο.

Europe: Italy:I’m a Mac: 10 applicazioni che uso ogni giorno

Disclaimer: questo post non vuole essere LA guida definitiva alle applicazioni per Mac, ma solo un assaggio di quelle che trovo molto utili per me. Essendo anche nato sui divanetti di Zara, in un caldo sabato estivo milanese, va preso come un post divulgativo e che parla di esperienze personali. Siete liberissimi di lasciare la vostra opinione nei commenti, anzi vi esortiamo a farlo, in pieno spirito di condivisione.

Tanto tempo fa, quando non ero ancora così “web savy” (e quando Internet non era poi così grande), passai definitivamente da pc a mac.
Negli anni ho sviluppato un elenco di applicazioni free delle quali non potrei fare a meno, e alcune sono diventate indispensabili, tanto da scaricarle il secondo dopo l’accensione di un nuovo mac, per renderlo operativo come piace a me.

Ecco le 10 applicazioni che consiglio a chiunque passi da pc a mac per rendere il mac operativo al 100%.

Firefox, il migliore browser open source che possiate sognare (non dimenticate che ogni mac ha già installato il suo browser proprietario, Safari, che, alla fine, risulterà sempre più veloce di Firefox, ma i differenti add-on renderanno firefox insostituibile).

OpenOffice: non ha nulla da invidiare a Office di Microsoft (su Mac l’ho sempre trovato alquanto instabile, mentre OpenOffice è efficiente e veloce). Per i testi senza una formattazione particolare continuo a preferite TextEdit: è già installato sul vostro mac, si apre in un nano secondo e se scrivete solo post o testi che poi andranno online, è perfetto.

Growl è un’applicazione che vi notifica quando un’altra applicazione compie un azione. La trovo molto utile usata con Skype, in quanto mi permette di navigare a schermo pieno e contemporaneamente leggere i messaggi che mi arrivano via chat senza dover visualizzare la finestra di chat.

Cyberduck è un’applicazione FTP, SFTP, WebDAV, Cloud Files & Amazon S3 Browser. Veloce, semplice e minimalista.

VLC è un’applicazione opensource per guardare file video (supporta molti formati).

Flickr uploadr, per caricare dal vostro desktop le foto su flickr.com. Non è velocissimo, ma molto comodo, soprattutto per taggare più foto insieme.

OnyX (non funziona ancora con Snow Leopard): è un’applicazione multifunzionale per pulire, riparare, e tenere al meglio delle sue performance il vostro mac.

Gimp: se non possedete photoshop, questa è la soluzione open source per editare le vostre foto (non ha le stesse potenzialità di photoshop, ma si avvicina)

Pomodoro Desktop: ne sono drogata! Perché? Scoprilo!

Skype: non basta il nome? Chat, telefono, e file sharing: tutto in un’applicazione, gratuita, che ti permette di parlare gratuitamente con tutti i tuoi contatti.

E quella che negherò sempre di aver scaricato: Transmission (sì, lo so, crea problemi alle volte, ma ci sono affezionata).

Ci sono anche due applicazioni proprietarie Apple, a pagamento, senza le quali non riuscirei a lavorare: Aperture, per editare le foto, e iWork, principalmente per le presentazioni. Per tutte e due le applicazioni c’è la possibilità di scaricare una prova gratuita per 30 giorni: provali e vedi come ti trovi.

E tu, che applicazioni installi appena accendi un nuovo mac? Che altre applicazioni trovi indispensabili per la tua produttività?

Nota: il 28 agosto 2009 è stata rilasciata la nuova versione del sistema operativo di Mac, Snow Leopard. Alcune applicazioni (e tra quelle segnalate in questo post solo OnyX), non sono ancora state aggiornate e non funzionano in maniera adeguata con Snow Leopard. Qui potete trovare una lista completa e in continuo aggiornamento, che vi consiglio di controllare spesso.

Riprendono in gran stile le Girl Geek Dinner di Milano. La prima cena della nuova stagione avrà luogo venerdì 16 ottobre 2009 e affronterà un tema molto importante:

“Proteggi il tuo mondo Geek”

L’obiettivo è quello di confrontarsi con le donne in rete e scoprire come proteggere preziose informazioni messe online, la propria biografia, ma anche la propria famiglia. Durante la serata alcune speaker affronteranno diversi aspetti legati a questo tema: dalla privacy alla protezione dei dati. E anche questa volta è previsto un contributo direttamente dal team GGD Milano!

Le iscrizioni apriranno venerdì il 9 Ottobre a mezzogiorno, una settimana prima dell’evento: segnatevi la data!

La data del nostro compleanno si avvicina, l’attesa di incontrarvi sale e allora.. dove ci vediamo? L’appuntamento è alle 19:00 da “Zerouno” (via del Pigneto 106/a), già “01″, perchè un anno è una traguardo importante! E vista l’occasione, abbiamo scelto un aperitivo aperto a tutte le geek ed eccezionalmente anche a TUTTI i geek

Recap: Sept. 15 2009 with Tara ‘missrogue’ Hunt!

I don’t think Mel, Kelly or myself could have asked for a better kickoff to our Ottawa Girl Geek Dinner chapter.  A packed room, great food and an exciting, passionate entrepreneur and author as our speaker.  We hope you guys had as much fun as we did and that you got a chance to meet at least one other amazing woman.

So the night started around 6pm at the Black Tomato as old friends and new started to arrive.  First thing was first…we put in our food orders!  Once we got that covered we gave the mic to our speaker, Tara Hunt.  As anyone within a mile of her can tell, she is an entrepreneur at heart and she wishes that for everyone.

Tara speaks to Ottawa's geeky girl community about her career experiences in high tech and interactive marketing

Tara told us she started her first company while a single mom to a preschooler.  She began to attract clients through speaking gigs, attending events and just good old fashioned networking.

She had big goals and during her first attempt to take over the world, or at least Toronto, she took some big risks that didn’t work out and ended up having to put her entrepreneurial dreams on hold.

Tara is a firm believer that taking big risks isn’t a bad thing.  When she set out she wanted to “change marketing.”  Why marketing? Like most of us, she spends a great deal of her time being a consumer and wants to be informed. Making informed decisions doesn’t only apply to buying great products and services, but also applies to buying from companies that (and while Tara put it a different way) lets just say “don’t suck.”  We all work hard for our money and we want it going to a good place.

Inspired by The Cluetrain Manifesto Tara set-out to start her second company in San Francisco.  With a smart blog, a great partner, and a mentor she could relate to, Tara stuck to her beliefs and continued to take risks making it all come together for the launch of Citizen Agency in June 2006.

Tara’s message to us:

Going into business is risky, you will fall on your face, you will be broke, you will wait for clients to pay…BUT…it is the most rewarding thing you can do.”

Her hope is that more women entrepreneurs will answer the call that has been put out by VCs and Angel Investors.

“There is money available and we need more women entrepreneurs, especially in the technology sector.

So there’s the secret.  Find your passion, work hard, network, take risks, stick to your beliefs and find a way to turn your passion into your business.

Europe: Italy:Intervista a Giovanna Negri di Fiat

L’intervista di oggi vede protagonista Giovanna Negri, Web Marketing Manager in Fiat.

Giovanna lavora in Fiat da 8 anni dove, prima del ruolo attuale, ha coperto la posizione di Communication Manager.

In questi anni ha vissuto la trasformazione digitale di Fiat di cui abbiamo avuto modo di discutere durante l’ultima GGD Milanese. Sentiamo ora cosa ci ha raccontato.

Che cosa fa un Web Marketing Manager in Fiat?

Gestisco processi differenti: dalla pianificazione di una campagna a supporto di un prodotto, alla strategia di SEO e SEM, alla realizzazione di progetti innovativi (strategia, coordinamento dei team che lavorano sul progetto, verifica di ogni fase di realizzazione), al coordinamento delle agenzie di comunicazione, alla definizione dei kpi per la misurazione dei risultati e delle performance….si tratta di un lavoro vario, che permette di interfacciarmi non solo con le varie realtà aziendali, ma di conoscere molte persone nuove con le quali collaborare.

Negli ultimi anni abbiamo assistito ad un ringiovanimento del brand Fiat, specie nella capacità di comunicare sui canali digitali. Come è nata questa piccola rivoluzione?

È nata dall’incontro di alcune persone “illuminate” che credono nella forza del digitale e che hanno saputo portare il giusto messaggio all’interno dell’azienda; è impossibile al giorno d’oggi non rendersi conto del cambiamento portato nel mondo grazie all’avvento del digitale, un’azienda come Fiat mai sarebbe potuta restare fuori da una rivoluzione di tale portata, anzi, l’obiettivo è cercare sempre di precorrere i tempi….

Parliamo di aggiornamento: quali strumenti utilizzi per essere sempre informata?

Il tempo a disposizione è poco, il lavoro tanto (per fortuna ) e lo scenario è in continua e rapida evoluzione; cerco di tenermi aggiornata con Friendfeed e Twitter, due social network che permettono di essere informati su temi selezionati in modo molto veloce. Poi va da sé…. tenendo viva la curiosità, facendo domande, ascolto, osservo e cerco di leggere non solo per piacere ma anche per tenermi aggiornata.

Quali sono i tuoi punti di forza e i tuoi margini di miglioramento?

Passione, concretezza, velocità e organizzazione. I margini di miglioramento sono in ogni campo e non finiscono mai.

Quali sono stati gli imprevisti principali incontrati durante il tuo percorso professionale? Come sei riuscita a superarli?

Devo dire che ce ne sono stati; per superarli penso occorra usare la testa e non agire di impulso, e ricordarsi sempre delle esperienze fatte. In più può essere utile tenere sempre bene a mente quali sono le priorità nella vita di ognuno di noi.

Quali sono i tuoi obiettivi, come persona e come professionista, per i prossimi 5 anni?

Come persona riuscire a contribuire ogni giorno a rendere la mia famiglia unita e serena.

Come professionista l’obiettivo principale è continuare a fare un lavoro che mi piace e in cui credo, per poter dare il meglio di me stessa all’azienda per cui lavoro.

Quali sono i siti, le applicazioni online, i device che usi maggiormente e che vorresti consigliare alle Girl Geek?

Facebook ho iniziato ad usarlo per lavoro e oggi mi aiuta a restare in contatto con tanti amici; Skype lo utilizzo per parlare velocemente con le agenzie di comunicazione e per parlare con i nonni di mio marito che vivono in Guatemala (beati loro!!!).

Uso TripAdvisor quando devo spostarmi e YouTube è il più gettonato dal mio Mattia di due anni (insieme alla Nintendo Wii naturalmente)

Quali passioni riesci a coltivare nel tuo tempo libero?

Dopo il lavoro tutto è dedicato alla famiglia; sono appassionata di moda, viaggi, la buona tavola e non riuscendo ad andare in palestra cerco di muovermi un po’ con la mia Wii Fit.

Che consiglio daresti alle Girl Geek che vogliano seguire una carriera come la tua?

Cercare di realizzarsi professionalmente seguendo le proprie passioni, non c’è niente di peggio che fare un lavoro per il quale non si sia portati e in cui manchi l’entusiasmo.

Penso che comunque l’importante sia cominciare, man mano che si va avanti tante porte possono aprirsi, le occasioni alcune volte bisogna anche crearsele!
