It’s been a lovely restful summer and now Girl Geek Dinners is back for the Fall season.
There is a chill in the air and the fall fashions are out. This September we wanted to talk about being a conscious consumer and keeping fashion close to home, all while being fabulously fashion forward. To help us out we have invited Rachel Dhawan of Brazen Design and Things That Go Bling to do two events.
The first event on Saturday September 5th will be in conjunction with the S.W.A.P. team ‘Take Off Your Clothes‘ event at Piknic Electronik on Parc Jean Drapeau. Rachel will be on hand from 4-7pm for free on-site consultations – helping people on a first-come first-serve basis to pull together the perfect outfit. We’ll also have some picnic blankets ready for some socializing so come down and say hi!
When: Saturday September 5th
Hours: 4-7pm
Where: Place de l’homme at Piknic Electronic on Parc Jean Drapeau [Map]
Price: Entrance to the Piknic Electronik is $10
The second event will be a few weeks later (date and location to be determined) where Rachel will talk about the hows and whys of buying local. She will also be featuring her Top Ten Must Haves & Where to buy them locally & her Top Ten Fashion Faux Pas.

Rachel Rachna Dhawan is the owner of Brazen Design, a line of big bad silver bling. She launched her business as well as her local fashion blog, Things That Go Bling, in June 2007. Things That Go Bling showcases Rachel’s passion for local fashion through features of local boutiques, designers and sales events, as well as fashion tips and street style specials.
The S.W.A.P. Team is a non-profit organization founded by Aleece Germano and Nicole Picard. Through its clothing swap event Take Off Your Clothes, the group endeavours to promote sharing as an antidote to overconsumption while increasing awareness of the human and natural resources involved in the creation, transportation and marketing of mass-produced consumer goods.

The title of this blog post is only slightly misleading: on Friday 28 August the Brussels Girl Geek Dinner girls were invited to a Klarafestival concert of Israeli cellist Gavriel Lipkind and pianist Roman Zaslavsky. In the video embedded below you’ll notice at around 1:50 that Mr Lipkind likes to pull his sidekick’s leg from time to time.

The last few weeks of summer mean we’re gearing up for an amazing new season of Toronto Girl Geek Dinners!
I’m very excited to be working with a stellar group of organizers for the upcoming season of events. We have TGGD co-founders Maggie Fox and Jenny Bullough on board. We’re pleased that Heather Leson has joined us. Heather was a huge help with our events in the Spring.
The organizers took some time this summer to look at where we’re at with TGGD and how we can best meet and exceed the expectations of our amazing members. We are making one change to our meeting sign up process. We’ve decided to charge a nominal fee (around $10) when people reserve for one of our TGGD events. This should help us cut down on no-shows and make sure that we maximize the positive experience of our TGGD events for participants and sponsors.
Oh, and save September 29 for the next TGGD. Event details are in the works.
Leadership Development Opportunity for TGGD Members
We have a late summer treat for you! Members of TGGD get $75 off the fee to attend the September 18, 2009 Poised for Leadership coaching workshop. To qualify for this special TGGD, please write the code “TGGD” on your registration form.
This extraordinary workshop is designed for high achieving professional women, early to mid career, who want to fast track their transition into leadership roles.
Through a combination of case-studies, self-assessment tools and small group discussions, you will learn proven strategies for adding value to your organization, gaining recognition and credibility, communicating with confidence and authority, establishing your brand as a leader, expanding your sphere of influence, and accelerating your career development. Every participant will leave with a personal action plan for breaking into a leadership position. Are you ready to explore your leadership potential?

Windows Live Messenger helped pioneer the concept of social media a decade ago; today it is visited by more people worldwide than any other free instant messenger site. In Europe alone, there are over 128 million Messenger users, each of whom spends an average of 6 hours every day having conversations, sharing experiences, making decisions and influencing others.

Windows Live Messenger has constantly evolved to remain at the heart of online conversation, with ground-breaking technologies that keep users expressing themselves, entertaining one another and sharing everything from videos, photos and music to all-important opinions.
For this special event, Messenger & Girls Geek dinner want you to come and share its Special Birthday cake with you. Everybody now:
Yes we’re going to a party party

The quintessential ice cream van in Belgium has “Ijsboerke” on it. Ijsboerke has been pleasing connoisseurs with genuine Belgian quality ice-cream since 1935. The recipe for success in all these years has always been the same: traditional craftsmanship, natural raw materials and day-fresh cream.
And guess who’s bringing at least 70 “icy ice creams” to Brussels Girl Geek Dinner #15? That’s right! Ijsboerke
And as usual, this sponsor, too, will “use” us girl geeks to try out their latest products and innovations.

The 15th edition of Brussels Girl Geek Dinner is a “bring your own food” one. But there are a few tasty extras. Chiquita, for example, has agreed to cater us with
- Chiquita Smoothies for everyone. Yay! A real fresh fruit smoothie consists of 100% pure fresh fruit, no more and no less. That means no additions such as dairy products, and definitely no concentrates, preservatives, or added sugar.
- Something brand new: the Chiquita Pineapple Sticks. 75g of 100% natural pineapples cut, cleaned and individually sealed into a unique, no mess package.

Sometimes Wikipedia simply says it all:
When Kipling was founded in 1987 in Antwerp, Belgium, it was Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, an iconic symbol of adventure and youth, that inspired the company’s name. Kipling is a company known especially for its line of nylon handbags, backpacks, luggage and accessories distinguished by their round rubber logo and furry monkey keychain. Today, with the belief that fashion and fun can exist together, Kipling continues to make high-quality bags and accessories in nylon, leather and new innovative fabrications, that are found all over the world.
And speaking of fashion and fun:
- Kipling puts one galactic monkey in every goodie bag
- Kipling gives away no less then 5 handbags from their latests collection:
- Teagan (Small wheeled duffle / Cabin size trolley)
- Limit (Shoulder bag with removable shoulder strap / Clutch)
- Gaelle (Medium handbag / Shoulder bag)
- New Arlene (Small shoulder bag with mirror and removable strap / Clutch / Across body)
- Thrill (small purse that’s so new it’s not in the catalogue yet)
We’re giving the bags away during a session of our famous Belspeldelspel sweepstake at around 19:00 during Brussels Girl Geek Dinner #15. So make sure you get there on time!
