Hull Girl Geek Dinners Launch Event

News 1 Comment

A little while back I got a request about starting a Girl Geek Dinner in Hull, so I sent out the details… a few short weeks later… and they are all set for their first event!  Now that’s what I call quick!  So without any further delay, if you live or work around Hull and class yourself as a Girl Geek (or a Geek) then do pop over to Facebook and see what their first event is all about.

The first event is sponsored by Hull University.  I’m hoping that the local community will get behind them and that some of the local Girl Geeks will also find it interesting too!

Next Wednesday (Oct. 29) is Amber MacArthur on personal branding at our Toronto Girl Geek Dinner. It is a hot ticket, so we’ve opened up ten more spots and given them to the first ten people on the standby list.

That still leaves a lengthy standby list, so I’m going to remind everyone how this works.

If you’re signed up on the wiki to attend but can’t make it, please remove your name from the list and leave your space blank. Your spot is then open to anyone on the standby list. If you’re on the standby list, all you need to confirm your participation is to move your name to the sign-up list.

We want to make sure as many Toronto Girl Geeks have the chance to participate as possible, so we’re counting on you to do your part. I don’t know a single one of us who doesn’t have stuff come up and plans change. Even if have to bail a few hours before, please update the wiki so someone else can take your spot.

Men are welcome at Toronto Girl Geek Dinners. We have one simple request – if you’re a guy attending a Toronto Girl Geek Dinner, you have to bring a female, or be the guest of a female.

A big thank you in advance to our friends at the Web Host Industry Review (the WHIR). They are our sponsors and are funding our a/v and sponsoring up to ten student dinners. As of this writing, we have one spot left for a female technology student.

If you get a chance, check out the awesome resources over the WHIR – find a web hosting provider, get the inside track with webmaster news and resources or learn about how to find and max out your domain name potential. Based here, in the Tee Dot, the WHIR is a great media property run by a bunch of bright and passionate folks.

Well I’m not sure that I really need to write a lot, this event pretty much spoke for itself.  We had two fabulous speakers and their talks were great. First up we had Elisabeth Kelan who did a great talk about gender, technology and innovation.  There were some great stats that came out of her research and you can find out more about that over on her site.

And then we followed on with a talk from Julie Lerman which sparked controversy, chaos and enticing conversations about what is and isn’t acceptable in the IT industry, along with how thing have changed over the years. (Expect comments on clevage both in the video and on Julie’s site sorrounding this talk.)

Julie Lerman

Wednesday 8 October was the third edition of the Girl Geek Dinner at the Flexbar in Amsterdam.    Despite the short notice in announcing the event, there were approx. 30 girl geeks and a few male guests.    Julie Lerman spoke about her years of experience as a woman in the world of computer programming.    The story was not as technical as previous talks, but it was definately inspiring.

It all started for Lerman with the serendipidous discovery of a DBase-III book, that was left behind by someone else.   Now, 25 years later, she is fluent in a score of programming languages.    She is primarily self-taught as you can see from her biography and weblog.

Julie Lerman is an enthusiastic public speaker.  She spoke for more than two hours about how she survives in the man’s world of ICT, and she explained how she accomplished it all.    She provided a number of helpful tips like ‘participate in conferences and online communities’ and ‘try to become an expert in something’.    At the end of her talk, she also provided a quick technical exploration of her area of expertise, the .NET Entity Framework.   Interested parties can buy her book.

The discussion continued after Julie’s talk about the position of women in ICT, with the conclusion that women do stand out in the ICT crowd, but that it can be beneficial by drawing attention to our successes and accomplishments.

Julie’s slides can be found here.   Photos of GGD #3 were taken by Wolf Schouten and Daphne Horn.

You can also find excellent descriptions of the evening (in Dutch) from Karlijn van den Berg and Janna Schouten.

The next Girl Geek Dinner will be on 12 January 2009 in the Flexbar.    The speaker will be Frances Brazier, Professor of Artificial Intelligence at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.    Keep an eye on our website for more information!

October’s Girl Geek Dinner is fast approaching! On October 29th our guest will be Amber MacArthur (aka Amber Mac), who will be speaking about the concept of a personal brand.

BUT – that’s not all, while the spots on the wiki are quickly filling up, we’d also like to announce that, thanks to the generosity of our sponsor, The Web Host Industry Review, we are also able to open up ten student spots on the TGGD wiki. That is, if you are a female technology student, dinner is on theWHIR.

TheWHIR is,

comprised of theWHIR.com Web site (including WHIR TV and WHIR Blogs), WHIR Newsletters and Web Host Industry Review magazine. Each is geared toward two specific audiences: Web hosting consumers including businesses seeking Web hosting services, and Web host industry professionals keeping abreast of developments in the world of Web hosting and/or further developing their Web hosting operation.

So special thanks to theWHIR for ponying up for the AV equipment and ten student dinners. We’re pretty much sold out for the event already (though there still are a few more student spots open on the wiki). Please be sure to check back on the wiki – there are often drop-offs at the last minute!

What is the GGD about?
For those of you who do not know the Girl Geek Dinner, the quick rundown:

  • It is not just for geeks: Attendees of a Girl Geek Dinner is someone who has an interest in technology and new media. Not necessarily technically minded.
  • It is not just for woman: it is part of the GGD to be for guys too – they just need to be invited by a women. Usually there is a 50/50 mix, which brings new perspectives for both genders.
  • It is not a dinner but a social get together of like minded people (as in: don’t come hungy ;) )
  • It if free to attend, but you do pay for your own drinks.

Same procedure as every year …
GGD is in the middle of this crazy week full of events end of October; for the same reason it was last year: because it is a great chance to get together an international crowd of people. And we are sure that at least half of the attendees will be twittering this year. ;) What is that week we are talking about? Simple.

BarCamp Berlin 3 Web 2.0 Expo Europe 2008
ggd-berlin

(plus many more spontanous partys and meetups.)

Kicking of with the international Barcamp Berlin 3, going over a Facebook Developper Garage via the Web 2.0 Expo and ending with the after party of the Techcrunch UK / Expo called Latecrunch, a lot of visitors will be in town to meet, ready to meet and party eh network.

Btw: if you are living outside of Germany, there are still a few spaces left on the guest list of the Barcamp and also the FB Dev Garage has some seats left. (If you would like to attend the expo, you can use the code webeu08gr26 for a 35% discount on any of the packages.)

How to attend
To attend, please enter yourself here. There is a limited of 80 people and due to the special surrounding of this event, there will be some reserved spots for international guests. Please note that you will NEED to register and receive a confirmation back, if you are not on the approved guest list we will not be able to let you in as space is limited.

Who is attending?
As the guest list gets updated frequently we have put it on a separate page. See here for the guest list for GGD Berlin. It would be great if you also spread the news through upcoming and facebook.

Don’t know anybody?
Like last year, we do expect there to be quite a lot of guys not knowing anybody local to ask to accompany them. It would be great if some of the females who do not yet have a guest could offer their help. There is nothing involved in being the inviting person other than that you cannot have another guest – you do not even need to talk to that person. ;) If you are a guy without an inviting women yet, please leave a comment here, so a women can *cough* pick you up.

10245 Berlin

Take the S-Bahn to Ostkreuz and then head for Sonntagstraße. Walk down the street full with bars and cafes until you get to number 30, which you will find on the left side.
