Hello everybody from Girl Geek Dinners Italia!
We are very proud to be part of this wonderful world of Girl Geek all around the globe :)
Here in Italy we had 4 Girl Geek Dinners so far, all based in Milan. But we are spreading the girl geek credo all around the peninsula!
On the 26th of September there will be the first Gril Geek Dinner Roma: it’s creating already a lot of buzz!
On the 10th of October there will be the fisrt Girl Geek Dinner Urbino, on the first night of the biggest blogging festival in Italy, Conversazioni dal basso.
In between the two or right after the beginning of October there will be the next Girl Geek Dinner Milano.

In June we launched a pool among all the girl geek, asking which subject they will prefer to discuss during the next Girl Geek Dinners: 176 people responded so far, and the results are quite interesting:
39% would love to hear about Web 2.0 and Web 3
17% about Open source
16% about SEO and SEM
13% about the evolution of digital images
7% about IPTV, web radio and new media
And a good 8% suggested many different subject, such as: Internet and no-profit, new jobs in the IT market, 10 genius ideas to transform your colleagues in 2.0 adepts ;) , microblogging, social network: how to…

That’s it, so far, from Italy! All of you we’ll be more than welcome to come to one of our next Girl Geek Dinner! Our blog is only in Italian, at the moment, but it’s worth a look to be updated on our next dinners :)
If you have anything in mind for us or if you are already planning to come to Italy and would love to attend one of our Dinners, just drop us an e-mail: info@girlgeekdinnersitalia.com

Round Up: London Girl Geek Dinner – Getting Into IT

News Comments Off

A few weeks back the London Girl Geeks descended upon Central Foundation Girls School to meet the students, both past and present, to discuss how to get into IT.  The event was sponsored by OpenNETCF Consulting, who do consultancy work on .net and specialize in Windows Mobile, Windows CE and embedded software development. Without them we wouldn’t have had the great array of pizza’s and soft drinks before the start of the talks!  They were very much appreciated.

The session was good and the students seemed to get a lot out of it, as did a few of the teachers there.  If you are thinking about going into your local school and talking then it’s well worth doing!  I’m sure the teachers who follow our blog will tell you that!  And the schools are very good at co-ordinating and helping outsiders come into the schools.

Take a look at the video and feel free to add your own pieces of advice for youngsters looking to get into the IT industry in the comments below.  You can also annotate the video with your comments.  I haven’t added any so far but they are open to all for comments!

First Dinner, Lots of Fun

Canada, Locations, Saskatoon Comments Off

The dinner on Monday night was a blast!  Girl Geeks from all ages and various areas of geekdom gathered and learned and shared information.   GingerK has posted a great summary of the evening.

Unfortunately the speaker was unable to make it so Emily and I instead gave a presentation on Point2‘s switch to Agile/Scrum. The presentation was well received and led to a lot of questions.

I am hoping to plan the next dinner for the fall, likely later in October after BarCamp08.

If you or someone you know is interested in speaking please get a hold of me.

ONLINE SURVEY: Gendered Experiences of Flexible Working / Work-Life ‘Balance’

News Comments Off

Dr Al James, Queen Mary Unniversity of London  a.james@qmul.ac.uk has been doing a research project which explores the business benefits of IT firms (Dublin and Cambridge) providing flexible working arrangements to help workers juggle work, personal life and family.

Would you be able to spare a few minutes to complete a short, anonymised and confidential online survey about your everyday experiences of juggling home, work and family; your preferred flexible working arrangements; and the ways in which your employer gains from helping you achieve a better work-life balance.  I’d be very grateful – all participants will be sent final copies of the final research report.  You will also be entered for a prize draw hamper in the autumn!

The survey is linked off Dr Al James webpage here:  http://www.aljames.org.uk

Thank you very much for your time.
